Native American Studies Program

PSU's Native American Studies (NAS) Program was inaugurated in 2004 and presently offers a Minor in Native American Studies. NAS is an interdisciplinary program with coursework drawn from Anthropology, Art, English, History, Linguistics, Political Science, and other departments and schools. The substantive focus of this curriculum is the histories and cultures of American Indians, Alaska native, and Native Hawaiians. The minor is meant to serve three primary constituencies:

  • students who have a serious academic interest in Native Americans and who wish to combine the study of Native Americans with their major;
  • students who plan careers in Indian or native affairs;
  • students who have a nascent interest in Native Americans and wish to fulfill their general education requirements with courses in this area.

This program prepares students to work for tribal governments and native- oriented organizations as professionals, or as informed professionals in organizations not specifically dedicated to native issues, but which interact with tribal governments on a government-to-government or business basis.
